Some magnanimous soul left a small pile of hand-made leaflets at The Church last week that kindly informed us that David Lynch's INLAND EMPIRE would FINALLY arrive in Buffalo for a one week stint at the Amherst, April 27—May 3. It only took about six months, but kudos to Dipson and thanks to the anonymous leafleteer.

Thanks to everyone who came to last Saturday's openings. I know the artists both appreciated it.
Joan remarked during the installation that we had a nice nature/culture vibe going on—she having produced a large-scale drawing of local culture in her rendition of the Allen Street watering hole The Pink, while Ruben had a large-scale photograph of a ficus tree, a composite image from various separate images of Los Angeles' ficus trees. Culture, nature, interior, exterior, and both were produced at actual size.
I first met Joan long before she came to teach in Buffalo, I think in November 2001, though I couldn't remember how I came to her work (Joan reminded me it was a slide submission). From the get-go, I fell in love with Joan's style of drawing, an obsessive rendering that always manages to look convincingly real and entirely imagined at the same time. The first drawings I saw in person that she rolled out in the hallway of her Brooklyn studio were really long drawings of buildings and rocket ships. I would have probably been fine showing any of Joan's drawing work, but was more than pleased that she opted for depicting The Pink, a fairly ideal subject for consideration, given the unending array of personal histories that have somehow wound their way through the place.
I met Ruben back in 2005 in Los Angeles and was struck in my studio visit that I pretty much liked everything he showed me, and it was all different. From cut-out drawings, to the Rigor Motors sculptures (two coffins shaped as though you had died sitting in your car), to the brilliant customizing of his family's white food vending van into a mobile gallery (complete with hardwood floors and track lighting), to a life-size ficus tree cast from concrete. Thankfully, the life-sized ficus tree currently at Hallwalls is a vinyl cut-out and it's really nice to have a soft sculpture in the space. That's not a genre you see a lot lately and it's intriguing to see how a big flimsy thing occupies space.

Olean Public Library Call for Work • Deadline May 3
The Olean Public Library has a 30 year history of exhibiting the work of established and emerging artists.
We are currently reviewing proposals for our 2008 exhibition program, which will include six solo exhibitions. The Library’s visual arts program focuses on the artists of Upstate New York, with particular interest in artists in Western and Central New York. Emerging artists are encouraged to apply. Visual art in all media is shown in the space, including painting, sculpture, drawing, printmaking, photography, video installations, etc. Honorarium and travel costs provided.

S.O.S Workshop: Special Opportunities Stipend for Artists

Learn how to apply for Special Opportunity Stipends which benefit artists in the literary, media, visual, music and theater disciplines. Artists can earn from $100 to $600 for specific projects. The S.O.S. grant supports travel accommodations associated with artist's own exhibitions and workshops, costs for materials to make their work unique, opportunities for advanced study with a significant mentor, professional fees, and services for lighting, graphic design or carpentry, expenses related to child daycare, allowing the artist to take advantage of a specific opportunity, and rental equipment.
The S.O.S. grant is made possible with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, as well as contributions from private foundations, and friends of New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA).

Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS), a project of the New York Foundation for the Arts, working in collaboration with arts councils and cultural organizations across New York State, are designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career development. Literary, media, visual, music and performing artists may request support ranging from $100 to $600 for specific, forthcoming opportunities that are distinct from work in progress.
How To Apply: Applications should be submitted to the appropriate regional sponsoring organizations at the addresses listed under the 8 Geographic Regions link above. Complete the application form.
